Improve Your Day by Doing These 7 Things Every Morning

Improve Your Day by Doing These 7 Things Every Morning

Tl;dr: mornings set the tone for your day - get your day off on the right foot by following the simple steps below.

Morning is a sacred time for me. It’s the one point in the day where I am truly alone -- my household is still asleep at 4:00 am when I rise. There is no one asking for something from me - the only commitment I have between 4:00 - 6:00am is to be kind to myself and to use the time to invest in building my positivity and well being.

It’s amazing.

For the last few years I’ve been working towards becoming the ideal version of myself. I’m assuming that if you’re reading this you too are working towards becoming the best version of yourself.

Despite the wide variety of routines I’ve tried over the past couple of years nothing was really sticking. Sure, I’ve had a few good days, but then slip back into unhappiness or being unconscious of my desire to improve. Until, I decided to just bite the bullet and get up at 4:00am.

Before we go on, I’m not advocating that you wake up at 4:00. I work best with limited distractions and thus this time gives me that environment I know I do best in. If you live alone, or go to work later in the day, you can adjust this approach for your situation.

What I’m simply saying is that by doing these things I was able to improve my overall happiness in a short amount of time and gain control over my day. All this leaving me feeling a lot happier and healthier.

Steps to a great morning:

  1. Prepare for the coming day:

    1. Set alarm night before and think about why you’re getting up and what you want to accomplish.

    2. When I set my alarm for 4:00am the night before and lay down for bed I’m reminded of how nice I’m going to feel once I’ve spent the time investing in myself the next morning. Which helps me to be excited when the alarm goes off.

  2. Drink a glass of water

    1. This has been shared time and time again by many sources and for good reason - it’s refreshing and helps to kickstart my body into being a positive and productive machine.

    2. Your body is 70% water (or something like that) - when you sleep your body is losing hydration and you need to replenish this when you wake up in order to be fully refreshed and ready to take on the day.

  3. Cozy up with your favorite beverage

    1. I love coffee - as many 30 somethings do - and it’s so nice to wake up, turn the lights to low (hue bulbs anyone?) and sit there with my warm cup of joe.

  4. Take in positivity

    1. Watch a positive video, listen to fun uplifting music, or read something that inspires you

    2. I’m not going to lie and say that I’m full of energy RIGHT away every morning - not the case at all. However, curling up with my coffee in the morning while I immerse myself in a few morning motivation youtube videos really helps inspire my internal drive and a high level of energy to take on the day with a strong positive mindset.

  5. Set your intention for the day and your life

    1. Affirmations - repeating a phrase or even listening to an affirmations recording can tune your mind to focusing on the things you want it to

    2. Journaling - helps to map out your thoughts and release any negative feelings.

    3. Review your goals - the only way to stay on your goals is to check in often. Doing it first thing in the day helps you to anchor in your priorities.

    4. Visualization - imagine your best self living your best day. What does that feel like? What does it look like? How can you hold onto this vision of your life throughout the day.

  6. Stretch your body

    1. Sun salutations are a great for a quick morning yoga routine.

  7. Do something that’s just for you

    1. If you haven’t spent time learning about what makes you happiest (and to be honest, this is something I just started to dig into) use the rest of your morning to do so.

    2. If you do know what makes you feel great use the rest of your morning to do this. I really enjoy writing posts like these and will use the time in the morning to write. You may enjoy music and dancing - put your headphones in, blast your music, and have fun!

This time is just for you, not for paying bills, not for cleaning, not for answering work emails, JUST FOR YOU!

Experiment with what brings you the most joy in the morning. Treat yourself like you’re the most important part of your life. Because you are.
